As a first-year 4th grade teacher at one of the district’s lowest-performing schools, I became the lead writing teacher. I discovered that no resources focused solely on writing were available. As a result, I created my own curriculum.

I worked with students using lessons built from my ideas. Their state writing test pass rate rose from 38% to 95%. I revised the lessons and tested what worked. During the next two years, the pass rate reached 100%.

The following summer, I created writing lesson plans based on classroom experience. Later, as an instructional specialist, I shared them with more than 75 teachers. The schools saw significant gains. After my third child was born, I began online teaching. Soon, people asked how to buy my lessons. I searched for how to start a business in Florida, and Top Score Writing began eight years ago. Today, I work with thousands of schools nationwide.

At first, I often second-guessed myself. I felt nervous meeting schools and selling my products. I hesitated to charge much because I lacked confidence. Over time, the results gave me proof. I now feel ready to take both businesses to the next level.

Running the school was also a leap of faith. Before then, I had never been an assistant principal, yet I was running a school with a tough group of students. We started with two kids, and now we are almost at capacity. Education is in my blood. I have wanted to teach since I was five.

Our digital program is expanding from grades 3–5 to grades 2–12. I am also creating new products that will make teaching easier. As for the school, my plan is to help as many kids as possible earn a high school diploma.

I am also building my personal brand. I want to show other women, especially moms, that we can do it all. My goal is to write a book about my story and share practical tips. I also plan to speak around the country and share my story with women everywhere.

What message would you like to give to anybody who has a plan of creating something of their own and making a living through it?

My first piece of advice is to have a plan. I did not quit my job and start a business overnight. Instead, I taught during the day and built my writing curriculum at night. I left teaching only after three years, when the business could pay me a salary.
