Examining the value of IoT sensors in creating a healthy, productive workplace.

Several factors impact productivity and well-being in the workplace, including environmental control, space occupancy, and employee feedback. Informed decision-making through thorough data collection is particularly useful in optimizing the employee experience, especially when setting trackable targets for improvement. As a result, businesses should view IoT sensors as a valuable tool for creating a productive and healthy workplace.

How can IoT smart sensors improve workplace conditions?

Smart sensors have various attributes that greatly assist in improving the workplace – particularly their adaptability, accuracy, and capabilities for remote monitoring. Overall, employers gain significant opportunities to optimize working spaces for the better.

Many businesses are also following the trend towards hybrid working. This trend creates an environment where employee habits change, and their workspaces must adapt. Comprehensive monitoring makes this adaptation process far easier for businesses, allowing them to understand employee needs better.

Tracking environmental factors, space occupancy, and employee feedback is vital when adapting the workplace to optimize productivity and well-being. Smart sensors facilitate this monitoring in the following ways:

Environmental Monitoring

Encompassing temperature, humidity, and air quality, environmental conditions can significantly impact employee productivity and well-being. The optimal office temperature is generally accepted to range between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius, but this can vary depending on factors such as gender, body size, and metabolic rate. Occupancy-dense offices also may require fluctuations outside of this range to maintain comfort.

Primarily, employers must listen to feedback from their employees to determine which temperatures are most suitable. If possible, businesses can offer different climates in different office areas to satisfy as many employees as possible. Installing smart temperature sensors throughout a workplace ensures consistent monitoring, and corrections can be rapidly made where required.

Humidity can significantly impact employee health. Smart sensors supply consistent, accurate data on humidity to maintain levels ideally close to 40%. The air becomes thick and heavy when the humidity rises too high. As a result, employees may find usual office temperatures suddenly too intense, affecting productivity and performance. Alternatively, low humidity adversely affects employee health, causing skin, throat, and nasal dryness.

Air quality is vital in environmental monitoring. High CO2 levels – often caused by poor ventilation – are linked to occupants feeling fatigue, dizziness and other health concerns. However, studies demonstrate that optimized CO2 levels increase employee productivity by up to 60%, making air quality crucial to maintaining a productive workspace.

Therefore, strictly monitoring humidity and CO2 levels is in an employer’s best interest to ensure employee productivity, as well as their comfort, health, and well-being.

Available smart sensors can simultaneously monitor temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and CO2, providing a complete overview of an office. Therefore, businesses can efficiently track crucial metrics with only one sensor type.

Space Occupancy

Previously, office layout decisions involved making educated assumptions concerning space occupancy. Currently, smart sensors comprehensively monitor space occupancy without workplace disruption or privacy concerns, anonymously collecting data about space usage, overcrowding, or inefficiencies to fuel informed decision-making.

For example, occupancy sensors placed under desks anonymously collect data on desk utilization. With hybrid working spreading in popularity, office desk use may drop in favor of meeting rooms and communal areas. Employers must use office space efficiently – when a shift is detected, repurposing space can better suit new employee habits. The workplace will be more optimized to employee needs, encouraging higher productivity.

Introducing hybrid work models in the workplace may also present downsizing opportunities. Tracking employee habits through temperature, motion, and proximity sensors can indicate whether this is a possibility before significant decisions are made.

Smart sensor occupancy monitoring can also inform optimized scheduled cleaning. Understanding how frequently different spaces are used allows cleaning services to be optimised, ensuring a clean, healthy, and operational workplace.

Employee Feedback

Listening to employee feedback is crucial to maintaining a happy workforce. Touch sensors are customizable and can adapt to the needs of almost any workplace. For example, appliances, restrooms, or reception desks can fit smart sensors to request immediate maintenance, technical support, or cleaning services. They can also provide feedback to management, ensuring employees feel heard and appreciated: open, bottom-up communication is critical to a positive atmosphere in any workplace environment.

Why invest in smart sensor technology?

Smart sensors are now robust, secure, tiny, and effortless to integrate into any developing environment. With a long battery life and scaling capabilities, they capture real-time data on a continuous basis that gives facilitates managers a complete understanding of how and when a building is used. Data is relayed to the cloud and is accessible from anywhere in the world remotely through an API. This enables decision-makers to take immediate action when it comes to right-sizing spaces and optimizing HVAC, heating, and cooling.

As demands increase to improve employee experience and retention, employers should utilize smart sensors to provide a supportive, healthy, and productive environment. Informed decision-making ultimately creates a safe, sustainable, smart workspace.

When I was at university, I was single minded in my passion for astronomy and understanding the Universe. I got a 1st class degree in Astrophysics from University College London, went on to get a PhD, then worked as a professional astronomer winning fellowships in the UK and Germany and publishing a slew of scientific papers.

But despite my outward academic success, I knew something wasn’t right. At 25 I’d never had a romantic relationship, and my relationships with my family were formal at best and at times hurtful. My mum recommended that I start seeing a psychotherapist, which I did. I also started practising Zen and began a daily meditation habit which continues to this day.

Through the lenses of psychotherapy, yoga and meditation, I started to discover the behavioural patterns that I’d developed as a result of two traumatic events that had happened in my childhood: when I was a toddler, I was sexually abused by my father, and when I was 13 my mum and stepdad were in a car accident where he died and my mum lost three limbs. I realised how my unconscious had learned to hold people at arm’s length in order to protect myself from further hurt. I also uncovered a great deal of repressed anger and came to see how desperately I wanted to relate to people better.

Looking back now, I see that I used my academic work in astronomy as a distraction. My brain worked out that if I buried myself in study, I could avoid having to face the painful aspects of my life. And what better way to escape my earthly life than going to the furthest reaches of the cosmos?! The way I dealt with my trauma was certainly positive with regards to my academic work, but negatively affected large swathes of the rest of my live. I ended up very heady, emotionally distant, and with skewed priorities with regards to family and relationships.

The practice of mindfulness (the common thread in psychotherapy, yoga and meditation) allowed me to let all my emotions and feelings arise, be seen and acknowledged, but not judged as bad (or good). At its root, mindfulness is a technique for letting things be and letting things go. I recognised I couldn’t change the events that happened in the past; all I could do is see them and accept them for what they are – and by doing so I became increasingly content with how I was.

During my degree and research training, it felt like reason and logic (generally perceived to be a function of the brain) were held up as the ideals to strive for, while intuition and emotion (which are more body-centred) were not just put aside but actively discouraged. As a result I felt like, and was often treated like, a brain on legs!

It took me a long time – including a decision to shift gears out of astronomy and several years practising and teaching yoga and meditation, including a period as an ordained Zen monk – to consciously realise how out of balance I’d got. My perception that science was only about linear, intellectual thought covered a much deeper truth. I’d become a scientist because I was in awe of the Universe and was seeking to understand its hidden depths. Awe and wonder are not just thoughts, they’re embodied emotions. The reality was I’d become lost in logic, facts and the academic pressure to publish, and I’d forgotten the magic of just looking up at a starry sky.

But surely I’d taken up yoga and meditation in order to understand the hidden depths the Universe too – this time the inner universe of my mind. So I began to explore how I could bring these two pursuits together in such a way that helps us improve our wellness and better understand who we are in this vast Universe. So let’s explore a couple of practices you can do today to do just that.

Generating a sense of awe

Look up your favourite space image on the internet. Here’s a couple of examples that work well: Westerlund 2, NGC 6503. Make the images as big as you can on the screen and look at them as you would in an art gallery. Let your eyes explore and become aware of how you’re feeling as you observe. Allow yourself to be captivated by the beauty and magnificence of what you see. Read the caption if you want, and see how that added information changes what you feel or think. You might be dumbfounded, inspired, confused or simply awed; you might get an explosion of questions arising that you want to research immediately, or you might just sit quietly.

When we take time out of our hectic lives to appreciate the beauty of our Universe, it’s like hitting the pause button. We stop worrying about our todo lists and enter a timeless space that’s much more about feeling than thinking. A growing body of research shows that experiencing awe (the feeling we get in the presence of something vast) leads to a wide range of benefits to our wellbeing, including improvements in mood, satisfaction with life, a sense of generosity and feeling more connected.

Mindful stargazing

Choose a night when it’s reasonably clear and go outside. Sit or lie down and take a moment to relax your body. Look up and notice what you see. Just take a moment to observe. Try not to think about what you’re seeing or judge it to be good or bad, just look.

When you first go into the dark, it can take up to 15 minutes for the eyes to fully adjust. So as your pupils gradually dilate, notice how fainter stars slowly appear. There’s no need to look around. Just allow your eyes to be filled with the vista of the night sky.

If thoughts arise about what exactly you’re looking at (which constellation, what type of cloud, etc), or any other kind of thoughts arise, don’t worry. Put them aside. Simply do what you can to really immerse yourself in what you’re seeing.

Poor communication

The biggest block for any relationship will always be poor communication. This is by far the most common thing that couples fall down on, and when this happens, the doors are open for all sorts of difficulties to arrive.

Good communication is something that is often at taken for granted and yet in all honesty, is one of the hardest things to achieve.

We might think that as long as we are talking to each other, we are good communicators, but there is far more to it than just that. Being able to understand our emotions and express them to our partner at all points of the relationship is essential, but this becomes so much harder when we enter into a period of conflict or difficulty. At these times it is easy to get into bad habits such as shouting, bickering, arguing, sulking, or thinking that the other one should know what we are thinking or feeling without explicitly expressing it.

Good communication is about being able to express difficult emotions in spite of them being hard. To express hurt, sadness, disappointment and to feel that we are being not only heard but understood and valued.

All relationships have ups and downs, but a solid, healthy relationship needs to be able to weather the storms and this can only be done when both partners are communicating effectively and respectfully with each other.

Emotional barriers/fear of getting hurt

This leads on from communication and can be complex in its own right. Emotional barriers are created as a way of protecting ourselves from being hurt. Here we can often look to our inner child (or teenager) to find the origin of such behaviors.

If we have been hurt in the past, it is only natural that we protect ourselves from being hurt again. That is after all how we learn as children not to touch hot things and put ourselves in dangerous situations. Heartache is no different and whether it be past love or a difficult family upbringing, those barriers are there for very good reason. The reality is that we can never truly find love if we aren’t willing to risk being hurt or vulnerable; trusting that even if you hurt each other, you will always love and support each other.

Lack of trust

I don’t see how any relationship can really go the distance if there is a fundamental lack of trust. Trust is everything in a relationship, regardless of whether that is around fidelity, honesty, or anything else. Trusting your partner and also trusting yourself, links strongly to unconditional love. When you really trust and love each other, you accept that even though things won’t always be easy, you have each other’s support. When a relationship lacks trust, that support cannot be relied on. The value of honesty and integrity is the cornerstone of most relationships. If they aren’t there, I believe the stability of the relationship is seriously compromised.

You are not accountable for the difficulties in the relationship

No matter what the situation, the simple fact is that there are two people in a relationship and as such both of you are responsible for the difficulties as well as the strengths. Some people really struggle with this and like to put all of the blame on just one person, but by virtue of it being a relationship, we have to consider that both people are responsible to a greater or lesser degree.

When difficulties arise, it is very rarely 100% on one person‘s shoulders. How relationships develop over time, habits form, taking each other for granted, communication difficulties, emotional barriers, or anything else can only be managed if the communication is good and effective and if both people take accountability for where they are at.

If you are able to do that, your relationship will likely go from strength to strength. Accountability, good communication, and trust are the building blocks to any good solid relationship. When we are able to consider that it takes two people to make a relationship as well as break it, is likely to last the distance.

The mission of Dietengage is to empower clients with the tools to make weight loss simple, safe, delicious, and effective. The ultimate goal is to improve the well–being of all sentient beings!

www.dietengage.com

Tell us about who you are and what you do.

I hail from India where I engaged as a dietician for 7 years whilst pursuing Masters in Dietetics and Food Service Management (India). I have experience of more than 1000 diet consultations in therapeutic, fitness, and weight management. Continued education pursuing Masters in Human Nutrition and Public Health from LMU, London UK registered under ‘UK Association of Nutrition’. My research dissertation is published in the EC Nutrition International journal.

I have been a keynote speaker at several health conferences, seminars, lectures, schools, and corporations focused on weight management in adults, children, and older groups, diabetes, healthy eating, and motivation techniques. Also besides being an article writer in newspapers, medicine magazines I was training dieticians and collaborated with other healthcare professionals.

Presently I am based in Canada working with one of the largest health care companies in the country – Bayshore Healthcare.

Tell us how you created this brand and what was the sole idea behind it.

I thrive on making difference in people’s lives for healthy living and encouraging them to make healthier choices.

The idea to name ‘Dietengage’ was directed to engaging people by providing authentic passionate diet service while creating a meaningful significant healthy difference in one’s life.

My philosophy is to enjoy all food and stay healthy. This inspired me to pen down a book called ‘Ramadan Diaries 2020’ which was published as a best seller under the etiquettes category at Amazon Kindle last year. Currently, I am working on a continued edition of this book centering on Ramadan 2021.

Go in detail and tell us about how your brand works. You may keep this from the audience’s perspective.

I assessed the demand for a flexible diet and the idea of online nutrition counseling instilled in my mind. I noticed the difference I could bring in to such people by imparting selfless knowledge. The experience I had working in pediatrics and geriatric Nutrition helped me grow my subjects. I started designing the flow of my work technique.

My program includes:

In-depth nutrition assessment

Personalized diets as per the needs and requirements

1 on 1 skype calls

Daily monitoring

Grocery list

Tweaked recipes

Healthy lifestyle modification tools

I gained expertise in various domains of Dietetics and Nutrition by engaging with varied cross-national clients while I specialized in the following disciplines:

Weight loss and obesity management

Cardiovascular and hypertension care

Prenatal and Postnatal nutrition

Teenage diet management

Geriatric nutrition

Gastroenterology

Bariatrics

Diabetes

Fitness

General Nutrition, healthy eating, and more…

The initial interview would help me understand the patient’s needs and design a customized diet plan. I have a questionnaire in place to document all essential details of the patient with respect to dietary choices and medical state. I set goals for the patients at each milestone to keep them motivated and going. Also provide helpful resources for counting calories on daily basis, physical activity, and much more holistically depending upon the need of the client with timely follow-ups. I also feature the success stories on my website for more visibility and appreciation.

What is your giveaway idea through this interview? Highlight something that may interest the readers on a one-to-one basis.

Dietengage is a perfect place for people who are ready to engage and are looking for specific advice and personalized counseling. My platform provides a continuous customized nutritional streaming confined to the specific needs of the client whereas a traditional setup is more mechanical and without a continued follow-up on improvements/success stories.

Explain the challenges you went through while you were working on brand creation. What are the challenges you go through on an everyday basis?

With my virtual contributions in newspapers, magazines, and hospital setup experience, I was very excited to design a system where I could see my clients succeed and achieve their health goals more efficiently. I was more focused to have my clients enjoy the being healthy journey rather than practicing dieting because they have been suggested by a physician.

I first created a website with information about me and my programs. My website has expanded now and has recipe blogs. I gained around 10,000 followers on Instagram. I am approached by various brands to introduce to my clients and followers on my Instagram handle.

I was able to write a book that was listed as a bestseller under the etiquette category only through word of mouth. 100% of the sales proceeds were donated to Islamic Relief Canada.

My biggest challenge is the time which I try to streamline living in different time zone through reminders and prompts. I have learned to be confident in service with a sincere goal of helping people and always be ready with a plan A, B, and C to never give up.

How do you manage your finances through the services you offer. Any fundings etc received?

My client referrals are mainly by word of mouth. Working in different setups from hospitals to fitness clubs, lifestyle clinics, MNC’s, and research within the nutrition/dietetics domain have been a catalyst that gathered most of my clientele. I am closely involved with South Asian communities in India, Middle East, and the UK through virtual platforms. I am also an author at Just for hearts (India). I work for one of the largest health care companies in Canada.

Tell us your future vision about the brand. How far do you want to take it? What is your dream about taking it to the next level?

It is highly important to align the need of the people and what I think. Reviewing Google analytics for the coming traffic and popular pages helps me improve my content.

I would take this forward by creating a platform for other dietitians to do more through content creation, partner with different brands aiding weight loss and mental health during the journey for the ease of clients. I also want to liaise with an app for easy documentation, reminders, diet journals, and calorie count for the clients.

What message would you like to give to anybody who has a plan of creating something of their own and making a living through it?

The priciest thing as an entrepreneur is time. So organizing and being committed to it needs a priority. Having complete knowledge with timely updates is essential in the healthcare business. Allow yourself to gain hands-on experience and best practices before coming into the market as each lead is a business you need to crack and sustain with reliability. Do not haste it is a process, keep your grounds strong to hold the fort of success. Be passionate aboutcare and remember why you started.

When our space is cluttered it is a direct reflection with where our mental health is currently at. Look around you right now. Is it neat and tidy or are there things everywhere? When was the last time you did a good ol fashion Marie Kondo on your home? I am sharing with you my top ten methods to feel clear headed and ready to conquer anything that comes my way. Here are some ways to truly embody that inner goddess that you were destined to be.

1. Marie Kondo that ish – Physically go through your house and declutter. If you haven’t used it in 3 months – donate it! A good way to go about this so you don’t feel overwhelmed is to pick one room at a time. Make sure everything in that room brings you joy or is a necessity. Create a home for every item in this space. If your feeling attached to an item that you no longer use, ask yourself why. My life memo is we can’t accept new manifestations and new things in our lives if there is no space for them. Go make that space.

2. Brain Dump – We have so many things circulating in our minds at all times (especially if you’re a creator archetype) sometimes you just need a good ol’ fashion brain dump. Get that journal out and just let it flow. All the to-do’s, all the things heavy on your heart, all the thoughts that are creating chaos – get it all out. Do not worry about it being organized, you can sort out a to-do or inspiration list from it later. Just free flow, messy write, and release all your holding on too judgment-free. Take up space and be proud of it. I highly encourage you to write pen and paper, there is just something about the connection of physically seeing it leave your mind to the paper. Your brain scientifically feels safe seeing it visually and will release it. Doing a voice memo on your phone or in notes just does not have the same effect.

3. Have a solid morning routine – A morning routine will change your life, I promise you this. Do not pick up your phone until these five things have been completed. I have all of my clients get up and first thing drinks water. Our bodies are dehydrated and have not had water in eight hours so you’re starting off by immediately nourishing your body and showing yourself some self-love. Next is to move your body for 10 minutes. There are so many ways to incorporate this but just do what feels good to you. A few of my favorites are stretching, spiral movement (releases feminine energy), a quick yoga flow, or stretching. Meditation for ten minutes. Be still and see what downloads for you. After your meditation picks your top three intentions for the day. I usually pick something I have to do, something I want to do, and something that will put me one step closer to my BIG GOAL. The last thing before you can move and groove on with your day is to gratitude journal for ten minutes. This can include affirmations, free-flow writing, a traditional “I’m thankful for..” list but it is setting up the emotion of gratitude to carry with you throughout your day.

4. Get Outside – We need mother earth to ground and be centered. If you don’t have time for a hike or adventure then simply go lay your hands on the earth for five minutes. Remember the ground has always got you. There’s nowhere else to fall. You feel safe, secure, and at peace doing this simple practice.

5. Be Present – Mindfulness is an amazing way to feel centered and eliminate overwhelm. “I can’t though it’s too hard to keep my mind quiet.” I’ve got you – Light a candle and stare at the flame. Any time thought about the past or future pops up just observe it. Imagine it just floating by. Do not get mad at yourself for having it, just notice the thought and then let it go. Keep your eye on the flame. Notice a smell around you. Feel the ground beneath you. What’s the surface like? Be in your body for that moment. Start small – 1 minute and then work your way up in time increments. There are a ton of options for free meditations.

6. Breathing – Our breath is POWERFUL. A few quick breathing techniques you can do to feel decluttered are balancing your right and left brain. Plug one nostril and breath in and out through your nose for ten breaths and then switch nostrils. This will also help in balancing your masculine and feminine energy. Another favorite is to take a breath in through your nose for 5 seconds, hold for 6 seconds and exhale through your mouth for 7 seconds. Do these as many times as you need until you feel a sense of calm.

7. Distraction – Sometimes to declutter we need a distraction. Maybe you’re going through a break up? Dealing with something heavy? We can’t always be clear and focused and when we get in these states it’s a good idea to distract. Call a friend, see how they’re doing, take your dog for a walk, make a painting, tap into that inner child and play.

8. Dance – I have a standing desk so I can dance and shake it throughout the day. Our hips are where the majority of our trauma is stored so when we shake our body and dance we are clearing our energetic fields on a scientific level without even knowing it. Sometimes that clutter in our minds needs to be moved through our bodies and released or we just simply have stagnant energy that needs to move and flow.

9. Data Declutter – I know it sounds silly but sometimes taking an hour and clearing your email inbox, sorting it in folders, and responding to all of the “I’ll get to it later” will motivate you like no other.

10. Unplug and Unwind – Our bodies need stillness. We are humans not machines. Sometimes all we need is a solid unplug. Put the phone in a different room and take some time doing something you love. Maybe it’s a book you’ve been meaning to read, a podcast you’ve been dying to tune into, whatever your jam is, make time for it. We come back to the task at 100% instead of the procrastination and dread which has been driving us with no breaks.

Decluttering your mind all starts with one simple thing. A choice. You make the decision to do it and pick one thing a day to incorporate into your routine. Decide who you want to be and start showing up for her every single day. Most of all allow yourself grace. As cliche as it sounds life is a journey and we are here to learn lessons along the way.

Tell us about who you are and what you do

I love to serve people. Some of the ways that I do this include providing success mentoring for clients, personal training for others and positive, practical self-improvement content for the press and radio in the UK and US.

Tell us about your new book and who it’s for

My new book is about ten inspiring, motivating and empowering contemporary Hollywood films and how they, like the case studies and practical exercises I also include, can change your life for the better. Like my life coaching and personal training services and also my featured self-improvement content, my book is for anyone who’s hungry for development – that is people who are courageous and committed to working hard for change, to being the best versions of themselves that they can possibly be and to living the remainder of their lives to their fullest potential.

Can you tell us about 5 Hollywood films and the life lessons we can learn from them?

The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020) can teach us many things such as the lesson that we can choose to work towards a common goal, despite our differing backgrounds and worldviews, whether that be eight anti-Vietnam War Activists determined to hold a peaceful protest, or whether that be different personalities within the same family consciously choosing to put their differences aside in the name of familial unity.

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017) is a convincing tale of how even a morally upright citizen can go to desperate measures when faced with crisis in their life, but also how the same person can choose to redeem themself and work voluntarily on a project for years that has the potential to benefit future generations to come, whether that be the lawyer Roman Israel (Denzel Washington) or someone like the real-life activist and legend Martin Luther King, Jr.

Wonder Woman (2017) is a fantastical and yet inspiring story of someone who risks it all in the name of world peace, something that many beauty queens such as Gal Gadot who plays the lead role, have promoted in the past. This is something that the world needs now, not just with all the wars and conflicts that are going on but also with the coronavirus pandemic.

Avatar (2009) is a great example of finding a higher purpose in life and going after it, whether that’s protecting the inhabitants and environment on planet Pandora as Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) does, or whether that is someone like the activist Greta Thunberg challenging world leaders to take climate change seriously.

The Matrix (1999) teaches us that when self-belief is combined with action to educate and upskill yourself, then anything is truly possible, whether that is breaking free of the Matrix, a malevolent cyber-force controlling all life on Earth, as Neo (Keanu Reeves) does, or whether that is someone in real life who breaks free of a destructive dependency such as alcohol, drugs or gambling.

Tell us your future vision for your brand. How far do you want to take it? What is your dream about taking it to the next level?

I want to continue to serve people from different countries in the English-speaking world and eventually become fluent in Arabic so that I can serve people in the Arabic-speaking world, too. One of the ways that I look forward to doing this is starting and running my own YouTube channel whilst still putting out written content in various UK and US media outlets.

What message would you like to give to anybody who has a plan of creating something of their own and making a living through it?

My message would be the same as someone once gave to me:

Believe in all your dreams

Be strong

You have enough positivity and enthusiasm to achieve your goals

Don’t let pessimists bring you down

Anything is possible

You can become a successful [xxx]

You give power to what you believe in

Be inspired

Pursue your passion

We may be weakened by the negativity around us, but we all have a high spirit within us that constantly seeks to become manifest

So, dear reader – may you live long and prosper.

Dawud Gurevitch is a life coach, personal trainer and author of May the Source Be with You: A Filmic Guide to Change Your Life, out now, available on Amazon.
