Given the ongoing global talent shortage, employee retention has become increasingly crucial for businesses across the board. While recruitment costs have always been a consideration, the current inability to easily replace lost staff places greater emphasis on the need to keep existing team members engaged. Engaged employees not only exhibit higher productivity but also demonstrate increased loyalty and are less likely to take sick leave. In fact, according to a Gallup Workplace report, businesses with engaged employees experience up to 41% lower employee absenteeism.

However, improving employee engagement is no easy task. Building a sense of connection and loyalty that fosters long-term retention and resilience within your organisation can be challenging, particularly when dealing with a sizable workforce. So, how can you identify potential employee engagement issues before they escalate into serious problems? The answer may lie in mindset.

Understanding the Relationship between Employee Engagement and Retention Employee engagement encompasses more than just your team member’s commitment to their roles and your business; it also pertains to their interest in their work and their level of emotional investment. A disengaged employee may not actively seek a new position, but most will readily consider one if the opportunity arises. On the other hand, engaged employees find both quantitative and qualitative value in their roles. They genuinely enjoy what they do, feel they contribute value, and believe their employer values them in return. Engaged employees often have a positive influence in the workplace, which can boost morale, thereby increasing overall team engagement and significantly reducing employee turnover.

Recognising that individuals who are happy at work, enjoy their responsibilities, and have positive relationships with their colleagues are more likely to remain in their roles is one thing. However, understanding how to proactively support employee engagement to retain your top performers is an entirely different matter.

How Businesses Can Foster Employee Engagement

The difficulty in addressing employee engagement stems from the fact that each employee is unique, with different needs. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, there are multiple approaches that can be beneficial.

Building a Strong Company Culture: While company culture is often discussed, many businesses face a disconnect between their stated core values and the day-to-day reality experienced by employees. Bridging this gap can restore employees’ faith in the organisation, helping them feel that the brand’s ethos has genuine substance.

Encouraging Communication: Effective communication is a vital aspect of employee engagement. It is impossible for an individual to feel valued if they do not feel heard. Providing employees with a voice and opportunities for open, two-way communication fosters a positive mindset, especially when accompanied by regular feedback, guidance, and positivity.

Investing in Individual Growth: Another crucial area impacting both engagement and the development of a positive mindset is personal growth. By providing individuals with the necessary tools for success, including training and personal development opportunities, you convey the message that they are valuable to the business.

Prioritising Mental and Physical Health: In the past, mental and physical health were considered personal matters, but we now recognise their impact on professional performance and how work-life influences overall wellbeing. Improved mental health support in the workplace can save businesses a significant amount annually. In 2022, 185.6 million working days were lost due to sickness or injury. By caring for employees’ health, organisations not only enhance productivity but also improve engagement since individuals struggling with their physical or mental wellbeing cannot fully engage in their work.

Supporting Mindset Change: Mindset is a recurring theme in employee engagement. It is an area that businesses often struggle to address, yet it permeates most aspects of our work and enjoyment. While mindset can influence employee resilience and be influenced by mental health, it also needs to be considered independently. Even the happiest and most enthusiastic employees can have mental barriers that hinder them from reaching their full potential. Mindset plays a significant role in our work and the satisfaction we derive from it, and it can be influenced by various factors, such as feeling valued within a team or managing stress levels.

How Shifting Self-Limiting Mindsets Boosts Collective Employee Engagement

Our personal mindset plays a crucial role in our day-to-day lives, influencing every aspect of our actions, from how we handle criticism to how we approach new challenges. While there is no universally correct mindset, a self-limiting mindset can hinder our work and diminish our enjoyment of it. Mental barriers convince us that certain things are beyond our capabilities, and the problem is that most of us are unaware of these barriers.

However, with mindset coaching, we can remove these mental blocks and unleash our full potential. At an individual level, the impact can be profound, enabling the fulfilment of goals, uncovering hidden skills, and making previously daunting scenarios—such as task completion, public speaking, and personal development—surprisingly accessible. This, in turn, makes the workplace more fulfilling and work more engaging. On a team level, mindset coaching holds transformative potential. When every employee is freed from the barriers that were unknowingly holding them back, productivity, engagement, happiness, and loyalty all increase.

Implementing Mindset Change

Achieving team-wide mindset change requires a holistic approach. Businesses need to address a range of issues, including those mentioned above: mental and physical health, company culture, communication, and employee development. Mindset coaching can be a powerful tool, enabling the identification of individual and team-wide challenges. Unless you understand the reasons behind employees’ behaviours, finding effective solutions will be elusive.

Employee engagement and retention are intrinsically connected. If your employees are not engaged, it is highly unlikely they will stay with your organisation for the long term. However, once you grasp the power of mindset and the importance of removing self-limiting mental barriers, you gain the ability to take control and support your teams in accessing their full potential, thereby building engagement naturally and positively.

Umberto Vitale was born near Pavia, Italy. While in school, at the tender age of 14, he built his first business. Using the eBay platform, he focused on car accessories. He chose a drop-shipping method and worked with a German supplier. Due to the nature of people not comfortable buying parts abroad at the time, he was able to grow his business. This allowed him to build his wealth and independence from a young age. It was the first sign that he was meant to be an entrepreneur as it came naturally to him.

After graduating, he worked in a family business, but took the time to learn the different structures and growth methods that a company relies on such as: Mechanism, Method, Strategy, along with Commercial and Management. Working within an industry that had been in place for decades and with a massive, millionaire turnover, it was a good, solid education. Over the years, Umberto learned how to revive a company going through financial risks, insert new technologies, and more.

You mentioned that you worked for the family business at a certain point. What do you feel was the biggest lesson you learned?

The family business had been in place and running well for a long time, but when the Financial Crisis of 2008 hit, we were challenged in new ways. Learning to adapt to the circumstances was a challenge, but it was a great opportunity for growth.

It allowed me to develop a new entrepreneurial mindset. While we were used to doing things one way, we learned that adaptability was vital to survival. I inserted new technological innovations and operating methods when it came to employers, suppliers and customers. It was a difficult time, but something that gave me vast experience and helped strengthen our standing in a time when there was a global financial crisis.

That sounds like it was a nerve-wracking situation. How long did it take to revive the company as you made the changes?

In just 2 years, I’d brought the company back from a situation of precarious equilibrium to a new commercial explosion. The great news is that more than 10 years later, everything is automated– every production and commercial process–which allows me to disconnect myself from the bond of “the more time I work, the more profit I see”. I do business in Italy, with all the difficulties and limitations that this state imposes, but yes, you can work with satisfaction if you have an idea, method and skills.

What do you do with your earnings? How do you continue to grow or stay relevant with the money or funding that comes in?

Over the years, I realized that it was important to reinvest the earnings accrued from the business. It’s important to learn all of the different possible methods you can use to invest and make “money work” by generating more money.

What else have you done to build your income?

In 2010 I approached the real estate world and completed my first transactions. I bought into judicial auctions. I then used the properties to create passive income. I plan to pass that down from generation to generation to my children.

Do you aspire to build other businesses? You mentioned your entrepreneur mindset. What other ways have you found yourself growing your wealth?

In 2012, I founded “Vitaltrading”, which was my first Facebook page. I created a community of people who are focused on Forex Trading. I started studying and learning financial markets with statistical and mathematical logic, along with software development and investment strategies that were based on financial market statistics. I have been creating courses and teaching others how to trade forex and equities since 2016.

You’ve got a lot of varied interests. What’s fascinating is how you create opportunities with each of these interests. Are there other areas that you found yourself working in?

In 2015 I founded “Signature Dreams” a pure e-commerce in DropShipping of Musical and Cinematographic Memorabilia. I did this driven by my passion for music and cinema. It attracted the attention of newspapers and fairs of the sector, including the sector of luxury and collecting.

There’s a pattern where you end up building a business or project out of your interests. You’re right about your entrepreneurial mindset. What else can you share?

In 2017 I approached the world of Cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Blockchain. I studied every project and technology that I could. I saw and rode the Speculative Bubble of 2017. With that in mind, in 2018 I developed my Personal Cryptocurrency which I used to incentivize and reward my collaborators and business employees. I did this with a cashback system using cryptocurrency to purchase goods and services exclusively reserved for them.

What a great idea. They must have loved that. When it comes to self-educating through the businesses you created and the family business innovations, was there anything else that you did to learn these methods and techniques you’ve used?

Actually, yes, in 2019, with the aim of improving my academic skills, I completed my university studies in business administration, management and communication techniques. That means that today, I can define myself as a complete entrepreneur who has understood the importance of automating every business I’ve worked with, along with diversifying earnings.

This is important so that I’m not dependent on a single source of income. By creating multiple streams of income, it protects me when one business makes less than expected. It’s peace of mind and financial stability. I wish that for everybody.

You mentioned you teach others. Can you tell us more about your academy?

My personal Academy was born with a goal. I called it Vitaltrading Academy. Now, with a smartphone and an internet connection you can work less and earn more.

In the Academy I teach people to develop, create, and improve their business. They learn and understand how to invest their savings and earnings in sectors such as online trading, equity investments, cryptocurrencies, and the real estate market. If you can combine them together, they’ll have a source of income that guarantees well-being and economic stability.

You can learn more at my website www.VitaltradingAcademy.com. Access my videos and start a one-to-one path that allows for direct access to me. I include monthly calls to follow my students and clients step-by-step as they train and work to become true businessmen.

We all have things that we are good at and not so good at. That’s just how it goes. None of us are ‘perfect’ and seeking to be so will only lead to disappointment. Self-esteem, like self-confidence, is how we regard our qualities and strengths. Good levels of self-esteem have us considering our strengths and flaws in a fair and balanced way; realistic and honest. Self-worth relates more to how we value ourselves and whether or not we consider ourselves to be lovable and worthy of good things.

So, with a good balance of both, we can know that we are imperfect and flawed, but also know that we remain worthy of love and good things.

If you feel you are lacking in these areas, you may feel like there is little you can do to change it, but this is not true. Here are some simple tips I have put together to help you feel good about yourself in the weeks and months ahead.

Your Personal Statement. Write a list of everything you are good at and have achieved. It doesn’t matter whether this is career, education, family, or cooking skills. Whatever you consider being a personal attribute, write it down. Once you have everything written down, take the time to absorb it. That list is your personal statement of life. When you feel you have everything on there, put it somewhere you can look at it every day; your bedroom wall, wardrobe, anywhere you can see on a regular basis how great you are.

Affirmations are your friend. This is a bit cheesy and may feel uncomfortable, but I guarantee you this is a brilliant hack and should be part of everyone’s daily routine. Create an affirming mantra to repeat to yourself regularly throughout the day, especially first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Even if you struggle with the concept, just go with me here.

By now you have your list of accomplishments and achievements. Seeing everything on paper like that, what can you say to yourself that will help to make you feel good about yourself? Whatever you want and whatever makes you smile. Keep it simple. Two or three statements that will make you smile every day. Try it.

Stop comparing yourself to others. Wow! We all need to remember this one right!? It’s so easy to look around and see others that are either doing it better than you, quicker than you or just doing what you’re not. But trust me, everyone is on their own journey and has had to do a load of work to get to where they are now. Plus, you literally have no idea at all what goes on behind closed doors. What may look bright, shiny, and wonderful on the outside is often a very different story behind closed doors. I’ve seen and heard it all. The very best thing that you can do to improve yourself, is to concentrate on being the best version of yourself. Nobody can do it better.

Exercise will always be of benefit, no matter who you are or what your abilities are. There are so many reasons why exercise is good for you. It keeps your body fit and healthy, gets the blood pumping around, and strengthens your body inside and out. It releases a load of hormones called endorphins which not only keeps you pumped while you’re exercising but also reduces stress, anxiety, and depression as well as helping you to have good sleep hygiene.

Exercise gives you a fantastic sense of achievement which in turn will have a great effect on your self-esteem. Knowing that you have committed to an exercise plan, regardless of how big, small or frequent, will give you a wonderful sense of pride. No matter what your sense of personal fitness or ability, create an exercise goal and stick to it.

Who are the people you spend the most amount of time with? This is a really important thing to consider because we can very easily underestimate the energy of those that surround us. You’ll likely have heard of the concept that you are the average of the 5 people with who you spend the most amount of time with and this is so true. But we need to consider this not just in terms of our friends and family but also who we work with, who we regularly speak with, and what we read and consume in the media, including social media. All of this energy feeds how we view ourselves and whether or not we have people around us that encourage and support us, or limit and drain us. This is a great exercise to do and one I highly recommend. What are the messages you receive from those around you? Are you incredible, wonderful, compassionate, and determined or are you never satisfied, selfish, lazy, and stubborn? Surround yourself with people who sing your praises.

Mindset. We always have a choice and that applies to everything we think as well as everything we do. If you approach life feeling defeated or incapable, that’s pretty much the outcome you’re going to get. None of us are brilliant at everything, that’s a fact. But we all have the ability to improve our skillset if we choose to do so. What is it you want to achieve? What is it you want to do better? Think back to your list at the beginning. What have you been able to achieve that you thought you couldn’t? When you consider that can’t do something because you either aren’t good enough, clever enough or fit enough, think about what you would tell your child or best friend if they approached life with the same attitude. We can’t complete big tasks or learn new skills overnight, but every day is an opportunity to take a small step towards a goal. Small steps achieved equal small improvements to confidence, and over time, those small steps have a big impact. Know that you can do whatever it is you want to do, as long as you approach it with the right attitude and mindset.

Nicole Villani spent over a decade in the luxury jewelry industry, as a Sales Executive, where she adopted a work hard/ play hard mentality that often left her anxious, overwhelmed, and stressed. Many years were spent chasing the carrot of “promised” fulfillment & validation by way of success, promotions and money; only for her to realize that those things, once achieved, provided very little, lasting satisfaction.

As a high achiever, she understands firsthand, how hard it can be to maintain a positive mindset, stay focused and motivated to achieve success, stick to health goals, find time to have fun, and attract ideal romantic relationships. Through her journey towards wellness, balance, and discovering her passions & purpose, she studied and cultivated tools to foster a deep spiritual connection, achieve personal growth, and up-level her life.

Through her Wholistic Embodiment, Nicole recognized the need for empowerment, leadership, and inspiration amongst mission-driven high achievers, to maximize their impact on the world, embody their highest selves, and live their next level lives.

Nicole Villani

Today, as an internationally certified Mindset Coach & Founder of Whole-istic Hustle™, Nicole coach’s clients through their Wholistic Embodiment, using a proprietary method of Quantum Hypnosis, Neuroscience, Manifestation, and more.

Most people today, settle for careers, relationships, and chronic dis-ease that they didn’t intentionally create. This in part, is due to limiting beliefs about what they should do, think, experience, and receive based on what’s deemed acceptable or the norm, by caretakers, community, society, media, and religion; and how they perceive problems they encounter, in their lives. If Nicole had to boil it down, the work is simple. People’s beliefs create their thoughts, which create their feelings, which then create their actions, which in turn create their reality. When people change their beliefs, they change their life.

There was once a time where Nicole felt stuck, with no seeming way out of the corporate grind. It wasn’t easy, but she made a way out of no way. Even though she encountered many thoughts and ideas that told her it was not possible, that her goals were too big, that she did not have enough time, or the resources to succeed, she kept going. Learning how to refocus her mindset, and shift her energy allowed her to breakthrough every limiting belief, that stood in the way of her realizing her dreams and fulfilling her highest potential.

There is no limit to what is in store for Whole-istic Hustle™. Nicole envisions it as a lifestyle-community brand, with a far-reaching socio-economic impact, helping to educate children to think outside the box and reach for the stars. While Nicole is working solely with clients 1:1, as she loves the hands-on approach and co-creation process that occurs, she will eventually scale it to offer group masterminds, and courses to reach a larger audience.

Nicole believes that anything is possible and that everyone is meant to live a life beyond their wildest dreams.
