If you find yourself without a job due to layoffs or have seen your hours cut short because of an economic downturn, you may be wondering how to make ends meet while you wait for a better opportunity to present itself. Even as you send résumés out and network with people in your industry, you can start a side gig and earn extra money with these ideas:

Amp Up Your Online Presence

If you don’t have an online presence on a professional network, now is the time to create your profile. List your work experience, your achievements, and any relevant degrees you’ve obtained. Add a profile picture that looks polished and professional – no vacation or pet photos! Alternatively, if you’re starting your own freelance business to make ends meet, or if you’re worried about ageism, add your company logo on your profile instead of a photo of yourself. Reach out to former colleagues and clients, ask them to add a review of your work, and build up your network, adding people in your field that can vouch for your talents and competencies.

Get Freelance Gigs in Social Media Management

Whether your talents lie in copywriting, marketing, or website design, there are a ton of opportunities to make extra cash helping businesses promote their goods and services online. Many solopreneurs and smaller companies don’t have the time or expertise to design a professional site, keep up with a blog, and come up with marketing strategies. They’re often in need of social media managers to help them create content and publish effective posts on their channels. So if you know your way around the latest online trends and technologies, reach out to potential clients online or through your local chamber of commerce to find local prospects: Arm yourself with a portfolio of your work, and start networking with decision-makers to land some gigs.

Become an Interior Designer

If you have a keen eye for detail and you like to keep up with the latest trends in furniture, decoration, design, and housing, consider lending your talents to people looking to beautify their space or make it more functional. To launch a new career in interior design, you can start by contacting companies in your area and see if they have openings for an assistant position, where you’ll be able to learn the ropes; once you have a few projects under your belt, you can go the solo route and advertise your services on online job boards, cold call potential clients, or reach out to businesses that may benefit from your expertise.

Reach Out to Your Neighbors

After being laid off, it’s a good idea to keep busy while looking for your next opportunity. Staying socially active can help prevent anxiety, sadness, and frustration from creeping in, and you can even make money from talking to neighbors and friends that may need your help! Brainstorm side job ideas that don’t require a degree, such as pet sitting, dog walking, or delivering groceries with companies like Instacart. To widen your net, put flyers up at your local grocery stores and at the library with your contact information, and join local online groups to advertise your services. Once you have a few clients, ask them to post a positive review online and ask them for referrals. This extra money will help you weather the storm until you find your next position.

Don’t let a professional setback bring you down! Keep yourself busy and make some extra money while you plan your next career move. You may even discover some hidden talents and a new passion you can turn into a rewarding job!

Are you a solopreneur wanting to share your voice and reach out to millions of people? At ceomedium.com, we leverage the power of social media to help your business reach a wider audience.

Nian Ellao is an entrepreneur who helps other businesses multiplying their revenues through strategic branding. This also includes other entrepreneurs such as aspiring ones to learn how to grow and run their freelance businesses to millions from zero. Zero in cash, zero in experience, zero in the portfolio.

Tell us about who you are and what you do.

I am a 24-year-old entrepreneur who is passionate about helping businesses and entrepreneurs thrive in the marketplace. I do this by incorporating branding and positioning as a major part of their business. Now, l also aims to share experiences in this beautiful digital world to help other aspiring creatives out there grow profitable and passionate.

Tell us how you created this brand and what was the sole idea behind it.

My brand is Vyous Digital Studio and right now, apart from the usual client works for brands, Vyous is now expanding its market to aspiring entrepreneurs who want to begin their own personal journey to a time and financial freedom through the lucrative freelance business.

Go in detail and tell us about how your brand works. You may keep this from the audience’s perspective.

Vyous Digital is nothing fancy, just a ‘studio’ that is passionate about solid brand creation. We are passionate about being an enabler of functional businesses and for these businesses to actually make good, real money through our services and basically anything else digital marketing related that Vyous can get its hands on for real business growth.

What is your giveaway idea through this interview? Highlight something that may interest the readers on a one-to-one basis.

Monetize what you are already doing every day. Like what? Social media. A simple knowledge of basic editing apps like Canva can up your side hustle game. Clients pay $350 up for 15 editable social media graphics, without you having to post them, just supply the graphics that you can easily do for a day. A lot of opportunities are inside the digital world, and conveniently it almost always involves what we already know.

Explain the challenges you went through while you were working on brand creation. What are the challenges you go through on an everyday basis?

One major challenge that I encountered during brand creation is identifying who is Vyous Digital as a brand. It is a struggle ‘cause there are lots of identities that a brand can portray, and identifying that is difficult because I wanted the brand to be a lot of things. I wanted the brand to be for everyone— and we all know that is not that ideal in marketing. I went with what felt natural to me, branded my business as if it were my personal brand.

Nian Ellao

How do you manage your finances through the services you offer. Any fundings etc received?

There were no external fundings received, 100% of the business is in a sole proprietorship. As per the current business finances, we keep it basic by maintaining a positive cash flow, cut unnecessary expenditures on upgrades, and simply keeping a rainy day fund.

Tell us your future vision about the brand. How far do you want to take it? What is your dream about taking it to the next level?

To be honest, I am very much happy with where Vyous is right now. I have always set my goals and intentions for the brand that I am to scale to only at such an extent that my time freedom is not compromised. I want to live by the number one reason why I started to enter the business, and that’s having enough time to spend with my family, spend time on things that are non-material that truly matters.

What message would you like to give to anybody who has a plan of creating something of their own and making a living through it?

Do not keep on waiting for you to be “ready”. The best time to take action and begin will always be today— if you think your heart is ready not when you think “what you know”, your knowledge, your experience is enough. Learnings come while on the process and it will be a constant trial and error, failing, learning from it, and moving forward. Trust your vision and give your all.
